Office partitions: retain, relocate or demolish?
An office partition system intended for relocation should not enter a demolition list before the owner decides where it is going. Compare its future usefulness with the new layout, then have the appropriate installer or specialist assess the system. A removable-looking panel does not prove that it can be recovered intact.
Establish what the system is
Look for existing manufacturer information, installer records and drawings. Identify doors, glazed sections and connected fittings on those records. Do not loosen panels or fixings to investigate the construction. Unknown assemblies remain a professional assessment question.
The responsible designer also considers the partition's role in the building. Its appearance does not settle structural, separation or service requirements, and the term demountable is not a universal permit exemption.
Compare three destinations
| Choice | Decision needed before work |
|---|---|
| Retain in place | Does the new layout work around its doors, perimeter and connected systems? |
| Relocate through a suitable specialist | Who accepts the system, assesses recoverability and handles dismantling, storage and installation? |
| Remove for disposal | Which parts are authorised to leave, and what interfaces remain for repair? |
Reuse has an actual receiving party and arrangement. A vague intention to save panels should not become an unqualified intact-salvage promise in a demolition package.
Review the edges left behind
A partition can meet the ceiling grid, floor finish and adjoining wall in different ways. Its removal may expose a strip that the next trades need to rebuild. Record the receiving condition at each edge instead of assuming the former room will immediately read as one continuous finished space.
For an illustrative office redesign, a useful meeting-room system stays while a separate obsolete enclosure is assessed for removal. This keeps two different destinations clear in the same plan. Use the office layout comparison to decide the wider removal depth.
Enquire after the destination is clear
Ask Siteforce to assess the ordinary removal portion through the office strip-out service. Identify the system, ownership decision, retained surroundings and any specialist relocation package. Siteforce does not claim manufacturer certification or installation capability by assessing adjacent demolition.
