Enlarging an industrial doorway: define the permanent building opening
A permanent industrial doorway alteration should serve the building's future deliveries and the new door installation. The required building opening is not necessarily the visible door-leaf size. Bring the delivery requirement, door supplier's information and designer's alteration together before asking Siteforce to assess the structural demolition.
Define the doorway that will remain
Identify whether the existing door, frame, threshold and operating equipment are retained or replaced. The supplier should describe the new installation's receiving opening and interfaces. The responsible building designer determines which wall components change and what supporting work is required.
A request to make the doorway wider should also say whether its height, position or threshold changes. Those choices may affect different retained finishes and building components. The demolition contractor should not choose the final installation dimension from a product brochure.
Reconcile three requirements
| Contributor | Information to coordinate |
|---|---|
| Facility or delivery team | The repeated delivery use and the approach to the doorway |
| Door supplier | The receiving opening, frame and installation interfaces |
| Building designer | The reviewed structural boundary and retained construction |
If these requirements differ, the GC returns the conflict to the responsible parties. A wider opening does not resolve an inadequate approach or internal turn. Equipment handling remains with its provider; this page concerns the permanent building alteration rather than a one-off equipment-transfer opening.
Describe the old assembly around the opening
Record the frame, adjacent finishes and connected controls or services. Identify available information about the wall and any lintel or support arrangement without assuming its construction from appearance. Where the reviewed scope includes concrete, discuss it through concrete removal. Door supply, powered operation and electrical preparation have their assigned contractors.
For an illustrative workshop upgrade, a replacement loading door needs a reviewed alteration to one side of the existing opening while the adjoining staff entrance remains. The receiving installer needs that side, threshold and retained entrance relationship defined. This is not a completed Siteforce project or a universal alteration method.
Plan the interval before installation is complete
Name who supplies the temporary security, weather protection and separation needed between removal and the working replacement door. The project team assesses how neighbouring areas are used in that interval; demolition does not guarantee continued bay operation or enclosure performance.
Request a Siteforce assessment with the address, proposed permanent-door change, coordinated opening information and the designer and installer contacts. Identify which requirements remain unresolved so the accepted removal leads to a specific installation endpoint.
