Removing an existing commercial staircase

Replacing a staircase and permanently retiring a connection between floors have different demolition endpoints. Establish which outcome the design requires before treating the existing stair as an isolated item. Its landings, surrounding openings and retained building all belong in the professional review.

Compare the two building sections

For replacement, the supplier and designer identify the condition needed for the new stair and its interfaces. For retirement, the design also needs to resolve what happens to the former connection and opening. Removing the old stair does not complete either the replacement or the closure.

The engineer or responsible designer determines structural and supporting requirements. Siteforce's structural demolition service assesses the specified removal; it does not provide stair fabrication or imply temporary-works design.

Keep retained access decisions outside assumptions

A second stair or doorway on a plan does not by itself establish continued building access. The owner, designer and project team assess the actual arrangements, including people using adjoining rooms and the route for materials. Do not begin removing fixtures or stair components to investigate attachments.

The mezzanine access guide addresses the narrower question of access to a retained mezzanine. This page concerns the stair removal and its resulting building section.

Describe the handover to the next contractor

An illustrative replacement package removes the agreed existing stair so a supplier can install the designed replacement. A retirement package instead hands the reviewed opening to the contractor completing the permanent closure. Each needs an explicit intermediate condition and named receiver.

Request a Siteforce assessment with the location, current section, intended outcome, designer and receiving contractor. Where a lift is part of the wider change, use the lift retrofit guide to separate that installation from the stair package.
