Whole-house interior demolition for a retained-shell renovation

A retained-shell renovation keeps the house while changing its interior. Whole-house demolition instructions still need room and floor boundaries: not every finish, stair or fixture necessarily leaves. Use the reviewed design to identify what must be exposed for the renovation builder.

Make one plan for each level

Name rooms consistently and mark retained stairs, shell elements, windows, doors and service areas. Identify where finishes continue between rooms or floors. A stairwell or continuous ceiling may connect two stages that otherwise appear independent on the programme.

Use interior demolition for the assessed partitions, fixed fittings and finishes. Any structural alterations need their own professional review and accepted removal scope; an interior gut is not permission to change the supporting building.

Compare two receiving states

Intended stateWhat the removal instructions need
Defined rooms stripped for new fit-outIncluded layers and boundaries beside retained rooms
Wider interior exposed within a retained shellExact retained structure, stairs, enclosures and receiving inspections

The builder should identify the required stopping layer rather than use bare, clean or ready as the entire specification. Repairs, new services and new construction remain separate work even when the interiors look empty.

Coordinate shared services and access

The responsible trades determine which connections serve more than one floor and what preparation the work needs. The route for removed material must be considered alongside retained entrances and stairs. The project team assesses vacancy or any proposed continued use; a whole-house package carries no live-in or fixed-duration promise.

In an illustrative renovation, the upper floor and kitchen change extensively while a reviewed stair and selected ground-floor room remain. Mark their finish edges and access relationships on each level's plan. The move-back guide discusses a later household return as a separate assessed decision.

Bring the house-wide package

Request an assessment with the address, floor plans, retained elements and renovation builder. If the main driver is installer access for an energy upgrade, the energy-retrofit guide helps compare a narrower option before adopting a wider gut.
