Removing basement finishes around a stair that stays

A basement stair may remain while its enclosure, nearby finishes or under-stair storage changes. The stair also forms part of the access route, so the work boundary matters to everyone using the basement. Identify what is retained before treating the enclosure as ordinary partition removal.

Separate the components

Show the stair structure, guard or railing, wall finishes, doors and storage fit-out as distinct items. Ask the contractor and relevant designer to assess uncertain construction. Do not assume an enclosure is independent of the stair from its visible finish.

Plan access during the interval

Discuss whether the basement remains accessible while surrounding finishes are removed. The GC or responsible project party should establish the temporary arrangement and restrictions. Do not leave that decision to whoever first needs to carry materials down the stairs.

Agree the next-trade interface

Record exposed edges and any components that must stay protected until reinstatement. Identify who repairs or replaces the enclosure and when the route can return to normal use. Removal completion should not be confused with approval to use an unfinished stair area.
