Keep window reveals clear in a room removal scope

Removing plaster or drywall near a retained window can affect trim, reveals and the edge where the new finish will meet the frame. Describe those parts individually. An instruction to strip the walls is too broad if the window assembly and some of its surrounding finishes are intended to stay.

Draw the perimeter decision

Mark the frame, trim, sill and surrounding finish on a photograph or elevation. State which parts stay and which need assessment. Avoid using the same word sill for several components without showing the intended piece.

Check the replacement finish

Ask the finishing trade what edge it needs to inspect and how it intends to meet the retained frame. Its proposed detail may change the removal boundary. Resolve that before work rather than trimming more material later to fit an unshared design.

Record the exposed condition

At handover, identify remaining fixings, damaged backing or unverified areas. Keep weather protection and any window-system repair assigned to the appropriate party. Removing interior finishes does not establish that the retained window is ready for every new detail.

Questions about this topic

Does wall removal include replacing window trim?
Only if the scope says so. Identify trim removal and replacement separately from the wall finish.
